Renewing or applying for a Pakistani passport used to mean long queues at a Regional Passport Office — a particular nightmare for overseas Pakistanis who had to travel to their nearest Foreign Mission just to submit paperwork. Today, the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP) has made online passport application in Pakistan available to both inland citizens and the Pakistani diaspora, with passports delivered straight to your doorstep.
This guide covers the full online application process, current fees, required documents, and the special categories DGIP has introduced specifically for overseas Pakistanis.
What Is the DGIP Online Passport Facility?
Through DGIP's Online Application portal (onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk), applicants create a login account and complete their Machine Readable Passport (MRP) application in a guided, wizard-style format — entering demographic and biometric data along with supporting documents. Before this facility existed, the Pakistani diaspora had to travel long distances to process their passports; now, applications can be submitted entirely from home, with the finished passport received at the applicant's doorstep. As of December 2021, DGIP reported that almost 720,000 passports had already been dispatched through this service alone.
How the Online Application Process Works
- Create your login on the Online Passport Application Portal and verify your credentials.
- Complete the wizard-style form — enter your demographic details, biometric data, and upload the required supporting documents. You can save your progress at any stage and return later.
- Pay the passport fee — this step comes last, by design, so you can review your full application before paying by credit or debit card.
- Document verification — your submitted application is reviewed at DGIP Headquarters. A passport officer either approves it for onward processing or refers it to the nearest Mission/Regional Passport Office (RPO) for further verification.
- Status updates — you'll be kept informed of your application's progress via your registered email, and can also opt to receive SMS updates from 9988 by providing your cell number at the data entry stage.
Important: Provide only correct and valid information. Misdeclaration is punishable under Section 6 of the Passport Act, and the online passport fee, once paid, is non-refundable and non-transferable to another person.
Online Passport Renewal
The Online Passport Renewal facility is available to both inland and overseas Pakistanis. You should apply for renewal if your passport has already expired, or if its remaining validity is less than 1 year. In the renewal category specifically, you're permitted to apply up to one year before your passport's expiry date.
Special Categories for Overseas Pakistanis
Beyond standard renewal, DGIP's revamped portal lets the Pakistani diaspora process five additional categories entirely online:
1. New Passport for a Newborn Baby (up to 2 years of age)
Processed under Application Type "NEW." For a minor older than two years, you must visit the concerned Foreign Mission in person with supporting documents instead.
Documents required: Valid Smart Card/NICOP showing the father's or legal guardian's name; original CNIC/NICOP and passports of both parents or the legal guardian; fingerprint performa of both parents/guardian; NADRA-issued Birth Registration Certificate (or CRC/FRC, or a foreign government-issued equivalent attested by the Pakistan Mission abroad); a death certificate if either parent is deceased; a court-issued Guardianship Certificate (attested by the Pakistan Mission abroad) if parents are separated, divorced, or deceased; a white-background color photo (350×467 pixels, JPEG, max 3MB); scanned parents' visa/PR card/asylum card or passport; and a signed "Form for Minor."
2. Reprint of a Damaged Passport
Processed under Application Type "Reprint Damage." Note: if you cannot provide the required passport pages as per SOP, you cannot process this online and must visit your concerned Foreign Mission instead.
Documents required: Valid CNIC/NICOP/Smart Card; scans of the data page, the damaged page, and five random pages requested by the system; fingerprint performa; a compliant photo; and a signed declaration stating you hold the original damaged passport and how it was damaged.
3. Reprint of an Exhausted Passport
Processed under Application Type "Reprint Exhausted" — only for applicants whose passport pages are genuinely full due to frequent travel/visa stamps. Applicants with blank pages remaining are not eligible for this category.
Documents required: Valid CNIC/NICOP/Smart Card; scans of the data page, two random pages, and the last ten pages of the exhausted passport; fingerprint performa; a compliant photo; and a signed declaration.
4. Reprint of a Lost Passport (1st & 2nd loss only)
Processed under Application Type "Reprint Lost." Note: a third loss cannot be processed online — you must visit your concerned Foreign Mission.
Documents required: Valid CNIC/NICOP/Smart Card; a lost-passport report in the prescribed format; fingerprint performa; and a compliant photo.
5. Partial Modification (Marital Status or Profession)
Processed under Application Type "Modification." Female applicants can also update their husband's name and surname alongside marital status.
For marital status changes: Revised CNIC/NICOP/Smart Card; marriage certificate (females only); husband's CNIC/NICOP or passport scan (females only); fingerprint performa; a compliant photo; and scanned visa/PR/asylum card or foreign passport, if applicable.
For profession changes: An original scan of the relevant official notification.

Note: A Fast Track service is also available in select cities, typically processed within 2 working days at a premium above urgent rates. Children under 15 cannot be issued a 10-year passport — only the 5-year fee/validity applies to them. Fees are revised periodically by DGIP; always confirm the current rate on the official portal before paying, since the fee is non-refundable.
Converting a Normal Application to Urgent
Overseas Pakistanis with an existing online passport application can convert it from Normal to Urgent in case of an emergency, simply by depositing the fee difference online:
- Log in to the DGIP Online Passport Application Portal.
- Select the "Convert application from Normal to Urgent" option.
- Pay the fee difference to complete the upgrade.
